Custom Mustard Yellow Buffet

I spent the day running errands with my daughter, giving my hubby time to study for class tonight, and rushing home to take advantage of the sun poking its head out to take a few pictures. 
As I was getting ready to stage this buffet I got a text message from my client letting me know the sun was out and she was dying to see some more photos. This is for you Ashley!!

Ashley found a buffet and wanted to paint it mustard yellow. She gave me three shades of yellow to pick from and I picked Almond Puff by Valspar. I don't know if my eyes or going bad or the girl that was training in the paint department mixed it wrong but the color was off.  First, you get to see the color I mixed and at the end of this post you can see the huge mistake of a color I chose.

One of our errands was Trader Joe's to get  flowers.








I don't have a color name since I mixed the color myself. 
I sprayed the pulls, waxed and very lightly distressed the edges. 
I sanded the top and used Kona stain to restain the top. 
Ashley has a farm table in her kitchen with a dark top and a coffee table with a dark wood plank top so we went dark with this piece too.

It's the color on the right and the color on the left is the one I mixed. I took it with my phone at night so it's not too clear but you get the idea. 

I kept picturing yellow school buses, and those big bright smiley faces...maybe even a yield sign. 
I was going to use a black glaze to tone it down or maybe even add a little brown paint to help adjust the color. Both were a FAIL! 
Thankfully, I think I made the right call and came up with a great color that was very close to the three Ashley gave me.
 I can't leave you with this picture so here so one more good one!


Yellow is my grandma's favorite color and I never liked it. In the last two years, yellow (especially mustard yellow) has been added to my top 5 favorite colors.

    You did an incredible job--flawless.
    I had the same trouble with mustard yellow, but it was with Behr paints. I thought they mixed the color wrong too.
    I swore I would never do that color again, but I have since ordered a sample of mustard yellow milk paint. Haven't used it yet, just waiting for the right piece.

      I'm thinking the yellow has something to do with the tinter they recommend but I'm not sure. I looked at the paint can and she didn't even put the paint color name on the label just the numbers. Can I just stick to blaming it all on the new girl!? jk!

    This turned out beautiful! I love the dark stained top too. Mustard yellow is a color I have loved for a while but have yet to paint a piece yellow... I might have to try it!

    What a beautiful job you did. I am so inspired by your work and thanks for sharing it with us. Did you use you homemade chalk paint on this or is it just straight paint? It looks so smooth that it looks like it was sprayed.

      Thank you, Vicki. I did use homemade chalk paint but I have made a new recipe I need to share with you guys. I use less soda and make a paste out of it before I mix it in the paint. I also add a little paint conditioner. It just eliminates the rough feel so I don't have to sand the whole piece. I will do a post about it.....I don't usually measure out my supplies so I will have to measure so I can let you all know!

    Completely in love with this. And a little too nervous to introduce this much color into my house (though I did contemplate a bright orange piece once used as a pigeon coop for storage in our spare room...unfortunately it didn't fit up the stairs).

    So what did you mix with the Almond Puff to tone it down? I recently got a yellow paint mixed, took one look at it and couldn't believe how BRIGHT it was. I had the mixer add a shot of black to tone it down--this normally works with a gallon, but since this was a quart it turned it greenish. Ack! This is the perfect yellow I have been trying to find to paint my end table for a year now! When I used acrylic paints to paint a wood sign in the same room the paint was a lemon yellow and I added a brown to it to make the perfect mustard color. But with a quart of latex I wasn't sure what to add to add since they don't have a shot of brown and I didn't have anything at home to mix it with! Help!
