No-Sew Crib Skirt

I'm a crafty person....to an extent. I can paint, use a hot glue gun, even use a few power tools but sewing is not in my list of skills.
I wanted to make a crib skirt because my white one had a mysterious large stain on it and I didn't want to buy a new one. I'm a cheap crafty person. I wanted something fun and different. Mainly, I wanted something no one else had! I like to be a little different, not much, but a little.

Since I can't sew I googled no-sew crib skirts and found three helpful tutorials. Numbers also hurt my brain....I'm serious, I get flustered and confused and once fractions are thrown in I'm a mess. Fear not if you are the same as me and you are wanting to make a no-sew crib skirt. This was painless and reasonably easy.

If you've bought nursery furniture you know it all looks the same. It's either a dark espresso, white, or light brown. I wanted a nursery that wasn't like every other nursery but I wanted to use the same stuff we bought for our first baby.

In the midst of getting the nursery (aka: storage room for junk) painted I was able to get this picture. We had the dark espresso furniture and my taste has lightened over the years. This look is way too dark and unoriginal.

However, this look is right up my alley!

I didn't make a tutorial for the skirt I made BUT I will be sharing links to the three tutorials I used as a reference.

Kelly from a View Along the Way gives great tips on measuring and different ideas on attaching the skirt.

Do It On a Dime Family has a great video tutorial on YouTube. She actually referred to a tutorial she found from Young House Love which is very helpful.

Young House Love  has a video tutorial on YouTube too. I like this one the best but they are all very helpful. I'm a visual person and I think that's why I like this one the best.

Helpful hints:
  • Use a fabric with a pattern! It's easier to cut a straight line.
  • Measure! Measure! Measure! I went as far as drawing a sketch of the crib and writing down the measurements for each side (told ya I'm visual).
  • Cut one side at a time, don't cut all three sides at once. I figured if I did one panel at a time I could salvage fabric if I messed up.
  • I used Velcro to attach my skirt instead of push pins since we have a metal frame the mattress sits on.
  • Buy a little extra fabric (maybe 1/2 a yd).
I bought 2 yds. of fabric and had 1/2 a yd. left over. I bought the fabric at Joann's and it's called Lola by Waverly Home. Make sure to get 54" fabric or else it won't be long enough. I also only made a 3-sided skirt (nothing on the back since it's up against the wall).

Total I spent $25 for fabric and no sew hem tape. If I would have used a coupon for the fabric I could have saved a little more cash. I also had the Velcro on hand so I didn't spend any money on that. I'm sure a few people will say you could buy a crib skirt cheaper but there's no way it would look this cute!! You could also add some cute pom-pom ribbon to the bottom or ruffles but the cost would be a little more.

Here is a sneak peek of the nursery. So far, I think it's pretty original. I'm currently working on a nursery reveal that will give details on paint colors, bunting paper, art work, etc. Stay tuned!

Two Dresser Makeover's

I wanted to get one more furniture post in before I go MIA for a few months.
I won't be sharing furniture posts but I will share pictures of the new baby in a couple of weeks.

These are two custom dressers I did for a client.
Her two daughter's were getting bedroom makeover's and she wanted to use these two family pieces.

BEFORE

AFTER

My favorite part about this dresser is how the top came out. It is stunning!!
Second favorite would be the keyholes.

Her daughter chose Seafarer by Valspar for her dresser.

Her younger daughter got to use this family piece in her new room. It had been in the attic for years, had lots of peeling veneer on the side, a warped back, and original glass pulls that could not come off. Painting around hardware is no fun but this piece came out perfect for a little girl's room!

BEFORE

AFTER
Piper picked out the color Fuchia Kiss by Behr for her dresser.
When I met the family both girls had their nails painted and they each chose the color of their dresser based on their nail color.  : )  You have to love a girl who knows what she wants!

I betcha didn't even notice this dresser had keyholes until you saw the after picture.

I will be back in a few weeks to introduce the newest addition!
I also want to thank you all for following along .

Keeping it in the Family....Dresser Makeover

Hi everyone....hope you are enjoying your weekend!

I have been finishing up all of my custom orders so I can relax for about 3 weeks before baby comes.

This dresser is a custom piece I did for Beth. Actually, it is for her little girl who is getting a big girl room. This dresser has been in her family for decades and she wanted to update it for her little girl.

If you are interested in these prints you can find them on Etsy.

The flowers in our flower bed's are starting to bloom.

If you follow me on facebook, you saw the original pulls Beth chose.
I found them at World Market and they were super cute. Cute doesn't always equal good quality or functional. For one, they sat way to close to the drawer to pull open. Second, I put all the blue bubble pulls on to make sure the drawers worked properly and when I went to open a drawer the whole glass ball broke off the stem.
They went back the next day!

I stuck to what I know and went to Hobby Lobby. I took a poll on the Picked & Painted Facebook page to get input from followers. (you should follow along on Facebook)!

It was a close tie between #2 and #4. In the end, Beth had the last say and she picked the blue and white resin knob.

Here are all the details:

I had to remove the veneer on the bottom two drawers and the top. We were hoping to stain the top but there was wood damage under the veneer so it had to be painted.

I used Swiss Coffee by Behr and sealed with wax.
The pulls are from Hobby Lobby

You can find the art here.

A Taste of Americana

Our life is a series of projects right now. Money is limited so things are going slowly but we are getting them done. Since our extra closet (aka: my husband's closet) is in the nursery my hubby and I get to share a closet again. YAY.....not really. Our closet space isn't big so we needed to add a dresser to our bedroom to store most of my husband's clothes.

BEFORE

AFTER

I love this picture. Our Granddad took it in Spain and it screams Mafia to me. I love that Granddad took the picture but it also looks like a surveillance picture taken by the FBI.  So eerie but so cool.

This dresser was in rough shape when we bought it but I was okay with it because we only paid $25!!
It was missing the trim around some of the drawers so I took it all off, sanded and filled any missing veneer and my husband sanded the top so we could stain it.

I tried to polish the original hardware with Brasso but it was taking too long and it was hard to get in the small areas. Instead I used aged copper spray by Rustoleum. The top was stained with a walnut stain.

I haven't put a protective coat on yet (but I will) and I also didn't distress or use chalk paint.

The paint color I used was Americana by Behr and it took about 3-4 coats.

Now on to finishing the nursery!!
