Accidental Tourist

If you follow my furniture projects, you know I'm a fan of using "oops" paint. Not only is it cheap but this time it gave me a chance to get help from all of you!

"Oops" paint rarely has a name printed on the label.

This time I asked the followers on my facebook page to help me name this color. 

The paint was a Valspar paint. I painted the dresser and added black glaze to bring out all of the imperfections in the wood.

It looked a different shade to different people. 

 

I thought it was a bluish-gray color. 

Friends thought it was sage. 

Other people saw it as plain blue.  

I needed help!

 

The names that were suggested on my facebook page were great. 

A few of my favorites were: Algonquin Moon (it's an inside joke between myself and my brother-in-law), stormy seas, luvy duvy grey, gone gray.....I could go on! There were so many great name suggestions. 

The name I liked the best was accidental tourist by Amy Kitchen. 

Her meaning behind the name is creative. Since the paint was an "oops" color it was an accident and I may not be able to get this exact color again, therefore, it's visiting. 

 Perfect!

It makes me want to be a tourist in a far away country. Shoot, I'll take being a tourist in another state!

Empire Dresser in White Raisin

When I first started blogging about furniture I always showed a before and after picture. 

Recently it's just been an after shot of a pretty piece of furniture. 

I feel this piece needs a before and after so you can see how far it has come!

There was a top and a complete set of drawers but the top was bowed beyond repair and all of the veneer needed to be removed too. 

 My husband made a new top for this dresser and replaced the right leg that had fallen off.

 

I decided to line the drawers with a funky ikat fabric because the bottoms of the drawers were pretty worn and overall gross. 

Overall, the dresser turned out awesome considering the original condition. 

The hardware and fabric came from Hobby Lobby

&

the color is White Raisin by Sherwin Williams. 

The top was stained in dark walnut.

Empire Dresser & a Change of Plans

I adore Empire style furniture and I think this one might be my favorite (so far). 

I feel like I should warn you now that I don't have a color name for you. I know, I know....I always do this. 

But what had happened was......

I originally wanted to paint this in milk paint and I actually painted it with 2 coats of Tavern Green milk paint. 

I wanted a chippy look and the milk paint was not chipping. Seriously, not one single flake of paint. I had to improvise. 

I found two colors from my stash that I liked and had intentions of picking one.

One was too dark and one was too light so I mixed them together and got this pretty deep shade of blue green. I think it looks prettier in person!

 I painted right over the milk paint and had no problems. I lightly distressed a few edges and sealed with wax.

 I've had a few questions about the bunting. 

It's super easy. It's a pack of 6x6 paper, scissors and string. SUPER EASY!

I will try to do a tutorial post soon.

Even though I really wanted a chippy milk paint look for this piece I think it came out perfect!

Red Empire Dresser

Hi, my name is Helen, and I am addicted to empire dressers!

This is the third empire dresser that I've purchased and probably not my last. I love the shape, the curved legs, the overall chunkiness (is that a word)...I love it all!

I used Red Gumball by Olympic and mixed in some baking soda to make chalk paint. I added brown glaze because I had it on hand and to tone down the red.
After I sanded and distressed, I rubbed Kona black stain to create a deeper red and a glazed look.

 

After I added the black stain glaze, I sealed it with two coats of rub-on poly.

 

I very lightly distressed the edges but the black stain hides some of the distressing.

 

I used black knobs from Hobby Lobby.

 

I love this dresser.

Empire Dresser Before and After

I have been wanting to work on an Empire Dresser for a while now and I was lucky enough to find one. The lady I bought this dresser from had it sitting in her carport and it had a lot of damage to it. The veneer was peeling off of the legs and it was pretty unloved. Helen to the rescue!

BEFORE

I mixed a custom sea green color and painted with homemade chalk paint and sealed with a coat of rub-on polyurethane. I get a lot of emails with questions about chalk paint, waxing, and distressing. I am planning on doing a post to answer all of these questions. If you guys have any other questions please let me know and I will answer those too!

AFTER

 I lined all of the drawers with a textured grey suede fabric. The fabric replicates the texture that the distressing shows on the top of the dresser. It was a nice coincidence.

I love those brass key holes.
